He had tried in vain to fight the mist in the beginning of Rocket's foray into the Rift. Now, Gavin understands the futility of the practice. Rather than the living caverns of the Ultra Deep Sea, the underboss and Beast are surrounded by the smoking ruins of Pallet Town as it burns.[break][break]

Occasionally, his mind's influence on the DREAM MIST shows glimpses of other uncomfortable truths. Snatches of memory from Kanto's regime, Silas' tyranny. It feels like an invasion of privacy as Bryan is given insight into Gavin's psyche that even struggled to pry out of him. Involuntary insight, but insight all the same.[break][break]

"I'm in talks to go back some time soon," he says, staring at the ruin of a collapsed Pokémon center. His left hand flexes as he recalls the punishment for such failure. "Do you want to see it in person? The future you're fighting for?"[break][break]

Seeing that they've come to a relative stop, Lugia swoops down to join the two men and Xerneas, her weight making the ground tremble as she lands.

He stands here, staring at the ruin that was surrounding the both of them. To be able to get a glimpse of rocket's history in Kanto. [break][break]

it was..well, what he expected so far. War, death, destruction all around him. The scene that and spoke to him about before time and time again. Xerneas looks indifferently at all of it, he accepted it as a natural part of life itself. Bryan keeps his mask on as he looks around the scene and Gavin invites him to visit Kanto. "You're going to visit Kanto?" he asks, more importantly why did Gavin care for bryan to accompany him? The last time they spoke was well...the meeting, and before that was when he fucked up the excursion. [break][break]

There was the professional commentary here and there but..not enough to constitute this invitation, was gavin worried? "Why do you want me to go? Muscle in case shit goes south?" he asks wondering out loud.[break][break]

Xerneas walks alongside Bryan, the grass around each hoof springing to life with each of it's steps. It's gaze eventually falling upon Lugia. "These are memories of your past young Merlino?" It asks him directly as he held Gavin in a higher regard than the rest of the children in rocket. He was lugia's chosen after all.[break][break]

Gavin offers a curt nod of confirmation.[break][break]

He's surprised that doesn't pick up on his reasoning behind the request, but distracted momentarily from his answer by Xerneas' inquiry. He glances at the deer as it addresses him.[break][break]

Young. He didn't feel young. He felt twenty years older than he was, worn down by the world. But Xerneas had likely existed since the beginning of time, or close to it, so they were all young in its eyes.[break][break]

"Mine," he agrees. "Rocket's."[break][break]

A macabre tapestry is woven from scattered memories, sparing no gruesome element. Their faces are blurred, lost to time, but the bodies are where they'd been on that day. Crushed beneath rubble, burned beyond recognition, blood spilling across the paths...[break][break]

It's as real as he remembers; he can hear the squelch of it beneath his boots. He can taste the acrid tang of smoke in the back of his throat, coughing as it tests his lungs.[break][break]

So focused is Gavin on this that he doesn't notice the way that the deep, rich purple of Lugia's scale and plumage begins to slide off like paint beneath a gentle rain.[break][break]

She certainly notices, ruffling her wings.[break][break]

To Bryan, Gavin explains, "You talk it up as a utopia. I thought you might want to see it for yourself." His lips press to a grimace as he glances at their surroundings. "This wasn't what I had in mind."[break][break]

They were years out from the Kanto takeover; it would all be different, now. Pallet had probably rebuilt.

Ah. So THAT was why he wanted to bring Bryan here, make him see the..."failed utopia." he looks away from Gavin at the burning scenery. [break][break]

However what Gavin didn't know, that's exactly what Bryan wanted. [break][break]

He wanted Hoenn to burn down, he wanted it to be destroyed, he wanted it to die so it could be reborn where HE was on top. He didn't want a shred of the league to remain anywhere. "You think this is gonna deter me?" he asks. [break][break]

Xerneas stares at Lugia, realizing his inner desires were being revealed. "Delarosa." He ignores it as Bryan turns to look over at gavin, a small shit eating grin spreading across his face. [break][break]

"This is exactly what I want. I want to destroy hoenn and rebuild it as something better. This version of hoenn-" [break][break]

"Bryan." [break][break]

"It FAILED her. She DI-" [break][break]

"BRYAN." he says as it was the first time Xerneas ever raised his voice at bryan. [break][break]

"WHAT." he says turning towards Xerneas as he looks behind himself and sees his old home manifesting behind him as the scene from Kanto begins to coalesce with the flames of retribution event he caused. "One's thoughts manifest here, even against one's will. One think it be best you keep a calm mind."

In contrast to Bryan's demented grin, Gavin is stoic as ever.[break][break]

His eyes narrow as the Beast reveals his true desires for Hoenn. He would have fit right in during Kanto's takeover, flourished as they burned and pillaged their way to victory. But things were different, now.[break][break]

"No amount of death and destruction will bring her back."[break][break]

A difficult truth, and one he's sure Bryan already knows.[break][break]

"You'll only inflict that same desire for vengeance onto others."[break][break]

Smoke from smoldering ruins becomes smoke from a raging fire as Bryan's memories are made manifest by the mist of dreams.[break][break]

Lugia looks to the skies and lets out a piercing cry, splitting the clouds and bringing RAIN down open the burning ruins. Gavin coughs violently from the smoke, his eyes burning from it.[break][break]

"There will doubtless be destruction in the path of our takeover. But needless destruction is to be avoided."[break][break]

A challenge burns in his gaze as he stares at Bryan.

Xerneas stares at it for a bit too long and it catches Bryan's eye, was that how he knew that internal thoughts became reality? By why would Xerneas care about it's color scheme. Unless that wasn't it at all. [break][break]

Bryan's eyes look behind the group as he could see something moving from within the smoke.

Lugia's PRESSURE intensifies as Gavin feeds off her anger. It's hard even for Gavin to comfortably draw breath, each pull of air like sucking through a straw. He persists regardless, eyes cold and narrow.[break][break]

Bryan hadn't been trained, hadn't been conditioned as he was. His low warning to the underboss was proof enough of that; Gavin wouldn't have dared. Wouldn't escape unscathed if he had.[break][break]

Yet Gavin doesn't strike him.[break][break]

"It's not about brutality. Kanto didn't know what hit them." How could they have? Rocket's push for the final takeover had been over the course of days, after all. There had been little warning. "Hoenn's seen worse."[break][break]

Merlino." he says removing his jacket that had been hiding his arm and bryan shows his wrist actively regenerating as had cut it off earlier in the day. The pain of his regenerating still resonanting throughout his body as he felt every bone snap back into place, each cell splitting itself. [break][break]

"But you were there, You did it. Kanto is YOUR fault. It's 's fault. All of you talk about how bad it was but you DID it. You WON. Now I'm the bad guy for following that ideology? Give me a fuckin break. Hell even Pr" he pauses as he almost utters Priam's name but pauses. [break][break]

He spots the Lugia using SHADOW STORM and notices a strange looking amoongus that looked extremely feral. Bryan wanted it for himself. He rushes forward, punching with his LEFT HAND that was weaker since it was his only hand at the moment and he slams it back

Why couldn't Bryan get it through his thick skull that there were reasons he could speak on Kanto's methods, and why they would not work on Hoenn soil?

"Didn't you like it? You must've, why else didn't you leave rocket? Why keep a shadow pokemon who is known to be extremely aggressive and violent? Just admit it." he says as if trying to convince him to indulge in his desires. "Temp asked me how to be more violent you know. Xerneas tries to settle some of the flames with an aurora beam, the flames continued to intensify as it singes some of Xerneas's skin and Bryan feels it. He moves away from the flames, realizing what's going on. "We need to leave this rift." he says as he crushes some of the mysterious ore with his own hands [break][break]

as it lays out a cleared path for them to escape as more and more of those mysterious Pokémon continue to spawn and attempt to surround them all.

Yet they hadn't taken the town. They hadn't seized the Primal Crystal.[break][break]

"Can't you see that the answers aren't black and white? It's not violence or a lack of it that's the problem. It's falling into a fucking pit of thinking the same shit will work over and over again when it clearly hasn't."[break][break]

He's tired of everyone assuming he'd rather never shed blood in Rocket's name again. How many lives has he taken since setting foot on Hoenn soil? He's lost count. They acted as though he'd removed his own claws, when really he'd only learned to sheathe them.[break][break]

Gavin's own ire fans the flames, and it's hard to breathe for reasons other than the PRESSURE that Lugia exudes.[break][break]

At some point in the argument, Gavin loses the plot.[break][break]

No. Walsh led, Gavin followed. At the end of the day, they were nothing more than glorified dogs. If the boss tugged on their leash, what choice did they have but to follow, lest they choke for their defiance?[break][break]

Bryan was hounding him as if he'd have all the answers.[break][break]

"I wish I fucking knew!" He wants to punch something, but on Lugia's back there's only one option. He'd rather not risk that, even if she'd barely feel the paltry impact of a fist.[break][break]

They soar away from the leaking mist, and it's when they land that Gavin rounds on Bryan again. He's a little calmer, now, with the forced gap in argument allowing him to collect his emotions. But he's no less frustrated, golden gaze burning.[break][break]

"You know what I do know, though? We tried Kanto's methods in Hoenn, and Blackwell wound up dead. I don't intend to follow him, nor do I want to see Rocket burn itself to the fucking ground chasing the ghost of a victory."[break][break]

There's an intensity to his tone, though he never yells, that suggests at the passion behind the words.[break][break]
